K9's Defence Work

K9's, as far back as Ancient Rome 101BC, have been used to deter, detect and defend. They were so impressed with hordes of dogs defending and attacking, delaying their victory in the Battle of Vercellae, the Romans adopted K9's into their ranks.

As the use of technology in war expanded and civilisation became more sophisticated, sports were developed to suitably test guardian dog breeds. Testing their working ability to defend and guard their humans. Today, these sports are used to maintain, further develop and improve on guardian dog breed blood lines.

We know of these as Protection Sports. These include:

  • IGP (International Gebrauchshund Prufung), which was known as Schutzhund

  • PSA (Protection Sports Association)

  • French Ring

  • Belgian Ring Sport

  • Mondioring Dog Sport

These are complex sports designed to demonstrate the skill of the handler, show the natural genetic ability of the guardian dog, including the dogs intelligence, temperament, drive, strength and obedience.

There are a vast cohort of exciting sports that guardian dogs excel in that don't fall into the Protection Sports field but are well worth checking out. Such as Luring, Dancing With Dogs, Fly Ball, Dog Agility, Scent Sports and Rally-O. What ever sport takes your eye, AustralisK9 Dobermanns make excellent working companions.
