Owning a Dobermann is a privilege and very rewarding. Dobermann's love their human, like no other dog can.

Yet, is a Dobermann puppy right for you? Have you done your research on Dobermann's and understand what generations of genetic selection has resulted in?

AustralisK9 Dobermann puppies are high drive, boisterous and confident.

Great care has been taken to ensure all puppies have experienced socialisation, familiarisation and exposure to different noises, ground surfaces and other animals to start them on a fulfilling, happy life long journey. It is the responsibility and honour, of the Dobermann Puppy Parent, to ensure that these early life lessons are continued throughout the puppies life.

Here at AustralisK9, we prefer that our puppies go to active homes that understand Dobermann's require, not just Puppy Class Obedience Training, but also Behavioural Training in the home and an ongoing commitment by the Dobermann Puppy Parent to consistent exercise, attention and care. These Dobermann Puppy Parents understand that Behavioural Training starts from the moment the puppy is collected and needs to be consistent through out the life of the puppy.

People who choose to dedicate their life to a Dobermann and work to full fill their Dobe's needs, are rewarded with a loving, personalised guardian for the family and home. They are a special breed of dog, for this very reason.

Dobermann puppies are high octane, excitable and very playful. Dobermann puppies are quiet unique in that we have found they have four distinctive phases in life, much like us humans. We find this easier to explain, through describing the following Phases: Puppy Phase, Toddler Phase, Teenager Phase and Adulthood.

Puppy Phase: This is the honeymoon period. Dobermann Puppy Parents have gotten their new puppy home and its all cuddles and play. Some puppies might be a bit shy and just need some love until they settle in. Some puppies will be needy and demand constant attention. Others are upfront and boisterous from the start and keep their Dobermann Puppy Parents on the move. Everyone loves the Puppy Phase.

Toddler Phase: Here the Dobermann Puppy has settled into their new home and grown out for a month or so. Through this stage, they will mouth everything in site. "Ohh, you left the TV remote on the lounge in easy access just in time for a chew and slobber all over it? Did you like those thongs or expensive high heel shoes? Lost the car keys that were left on the coffee table?" This is what happens in a household that has not prepared itself or made itself Dobermann puppy safe.

Anything that the Dobermann Parent uses regularly or holds dear is fair game to a Dobermann Toddler. They watch and study us like their little lives depend upon it. We don't even realise the attention they pay to the things we do. This is part of what makes the Dobermann so special and how it is that they will lay down their lives for us.

During the Toddler Phase, the Behavioural Training is very important and sets the puppy up for success. It is very important to set boundaries, especially between the puppy and children within the household.

Kids and Toddler Phase: Dobermann puppies love to play with kids but they do not know their own strength. Without appropriate Behavioural Training, guidance and boundaries, kids can get knocked down, kids toys chewed and shredded to bits and food taken from children's hands or plate. It is a lot of work and dedication on the Puppy Parent to not only train the puppy but also the children on how to behave around the puppy so that everyone can play in a safe environment. If you are not prepared to put the work in to ensure your children know how to play safely with a Dobermann Puppy, than re-think this breed and timing of getting a Dobermann Puppy. Maybe wait until the children have grown up some.  As this breed is not a backyard ornament.

Teenager Phase: Unfortunately, anyone who has raised teenagers and is about to become a Dobermann Puppy Parent, is going to go  through it all over again. They will start to make decisions for themselves and they will think it is in your best interest but they haven't learned the consequences of their decisions as yet. Dobermann Puppy Parents can mistake this for defiance. Some Dobermann Teenagers will respond to a reprimand by sooking.... and they can sulk for hours.  They will take it upon themselves to learn new behaviours, good and bad, that we have no idea where they got them from. They are like sponges, taking everything in.

Some high drive dobermann teenagers can take it upon themselves to think of everything as a threat to their family, as they have not learned to distinguish between what is good and bad. Hormones are kicking in and they are exploring their new found strength, speed and agility. It is a very exciting time to own a Dobermann. It is very important to have ensured your Dobermann Puppy has been very well socialised prior to hitting the Teenager Phase with all your regular friends, extended family members and other pets. Being consistent in our training helps to weather this phase. This is where Dobermann Puppy Parents need to be fully responsible for their Dobermann and ensure a good training foundation has been put in place. If this doesn't sound like the kind of work you want to put into owning a dog, please re-consider owning this breed.

Adulthood Phase: All the hard work put into training your Dobermann puppy is shining through. Here you have dedicated yourselves to training a wonderfull breed that now rewards you with love, loyalty and guardianship. In a way no other dog can. Your Dobermann is an exemplary specimen of the breed that everyone wants to take home with them. Your Dobermann is a velcro dog, that is always ready to go with you everywhere. They enjoy the car rides, hiking, bike riding, horse riding, strolls along the beach, kids play date in the park and is always keeping an eye out for you and your family.

If you have dedicated your Dobermann to a dog sport such as Obedience trials, Track and Search, Rally-O, or IPO etc, they are loving their training and performing like a champion.

AustralisK9 Dobermann's need to be mentally stimulated, exercised and socialised. If this is not achieved, Dobermanns can become destructive, bark excessively, dig holes and destroy furniture and other household goods. You will need to spend a lot of time training and exercising your Dobermann, focusing on Behavioural and Obedience Training.  If you are not prepared to put the effort into Training your Dobermann Puppy and train your kids/ family on how to own and love a Dobermann Puppy, than please, reconsider getting a Dobermann puppy.
